- • If this activity remains confined to a small area of
- brain, the result is a focal seizure. During this
- type of seizure, a patient remains conscious and
- may experience a strange sensation, such as a
- smell or taste, or have a brief episode of
- uncharacteristic behavior. Another common type
- of focal seizure includes the uncontrolled
- movement of an arm or leg. These seizures
- usually last from seconds to minutes and a
- complete recovery occurs within the same time
- period.
- • A generalized seizure occurs when the electrical
- activity spreads throughout the brain. When this
- occurs, the patient loses consciousness, falls to
- the ground and may have uncontrolled movements
- of the body, arms and legs. Control over the
- bowel and bladder may be lost. The seizure can go
- on for several minutes, then it may take several
- hours for the person to awaken.
